Environment groups welcome government recognition that world’s resources are not limitless

Monday 7 March 2005

Responding to the launch of the government's sustainable development framework, everyone campaigners welcomed the UK and Scottish governments' commitment to living within environmental limits.

everyone, the campaign run by Scottish Environment LINK to move environmental issues higher up the political agenda, recently launched a Report , "Second term, one year on", which assessed the Scottish Parliament's record on the environment. Sustainability was identified as a key area where the Executive had to take action.

Fred Edwards, President of LINK, said, "Sustainability is the vital cross cutting issue. Yet this is the area where the gap between expressed intention and reality is particularly wide. The Executive has pursued unrestrained economic growth as a single, overriding goal, unqualified by considerations of sustainability. Research sponsored by the UK Government on "life satisfaction" has demonstrated that levels of satisfaction do not correlate to economic growth in already developed society. It is vital that government moves away from using GDP as the only measure of success. Today's launch is an important first step."
